IV fluids help maintain a healthy blood pressure, ensure good tissue blood perfusion and help clear the anaesthetic drugs from your pet’s system.
Intravenous fluids are administered during all anesthesic procedures. Many drugs used for general anesthesia tend to cause decreases in blood pressure. Intravenous fluids combat this decrease. In addition, if there are any unforeseen adverse reactions under anesthesia, an intravenous catheter allows immediate intravenous administration of potentially life saving medications.
IV fluids are also provided to critical and sick patients. This is to help combat electrolyte abnormalities, correct dehydration, flush toxins, and stabilize patients who may be experiencing signs of shock.
